{"id":620,"date":"2020-10-12T14:49:01","date_gmt":"2020-10-12T12:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mars.uj.edu.pl\/?page_id=620"},"modified":"2020-10-12T14:49:02","modified_gmt":"2020-10-12T12:49:02","slug":"sun-lab","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mars.uj.edu.pl\/index.php\/structure\/sun-lab\/","title":{"rendered":"Sun Lab"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Sun Lab\nstudies effects of solar activity on the near-Earth space environment\nknown as Space Weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Space Weather,\nespecially when it is of high and variable intensity, can cause\nvarious problems for both civil and military technology located in\nspace (e.g. satellite operations, communication disruptions), and\neven in the lower atmosphere and on the Earth&#8217;s surface (e.g.\naviation and electrical systems), on which our society is\nincreasingly dependent. It is also clear that forecasting space\nweather will be of crucial importance for planned space missions, in\nparticular for a manned mission to Mars. Therefore, this field of\nresearch is intensively developed all over the world, and its\nimportance is constantly growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sun Lab\nresearch will focus on finding methods to better forecast any\ndangerous phenomena generated on the Sun and their impact on our\nplanet. They will consist of three segments:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Solar &#8211; in this segment, the research will cover all phenomena related to the activity of the Sun (active areas, flares, coronal mass ejections)<\/li><li>Underway (in interplanetary medium) &#8211; this segment is devoted to the study of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). They are the source of the strongest geomagnetic disturbance on Earth. Currently, together with colleagues from NASA GSFC, we have created the largest CMEs catalog.<\/li><li>Near Earth &#8211; this segment includes research related to the effects of solar activity observed around our planet. The result of these studies should be the search for methods for better prediction of the intensity of geomagnetic storms, and the impact of particle energy fluxes and high-energy radiation on the Earth&#8217;s magnetosphere and atmosphere.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Sun Lab studies effects of solar activity on the near-Earth space environment known as Space Weather.
